About Us

The Holy Bible was written by men inspired by God. Therefore we are about God’s Word. We believe and teach the truth of the gospel which consist of the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The foundation of our teaching is built on God’s word. Through our Worship and Praise we edify God and give Him all glory and honor. John 4:24 says God is a Spirit and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and truth. As we surrender ourselves to Him we experience the joy and the presence of the Holy Spirit. God gave His only begotten son; which displays His unconditional love. At First Elizabeth Baptist Church we strive to exemplify that agape love that has been bestowed upon us.

Church which comes from the Greek word Ekklesia which means a called out assembly. It is the baptized believers in Christ Jesus that makes up the Church. The believers have not been called to just sit or assemble, but they have been given a mission. Mission is a task or job that someone is given to do. (To order or request someone to make or do something). It means to be commissioned.

After Jesus resurrection and just before His ascension He calls his disciples together and gives them what we call the Great Commission. This was not just for the present disciples, but also to all future disciples; that is all those who profess to be born again. The Great Commission is not just an order but a pronouncement of victory by the risen Savior through his disciples; on the basis of all authority given to Christ as well as all power. The Christian Disciple is to carry out the Great Commission, of the church. When he says Go ye it conveys the force of a command: “Go” in other word’s you must go. The question might be to some - where do we go and what should we do. Acts 1:8 declares that ye shall receive power after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me in all the world. The commission is world wide. Every where you go, you need to tell someone about Jesus.

We need to understand that the Church is the vehicle of Christ’s mission to the world. The controlling purpose of the local church is to make disciples of all kinds of people. Those who are evangelized and converted should then be baptized attesting to their identification with Christ and the local body of believers. The baptism is in the name of the Father, Son, and the Holy Ghost. The Father is the source of authority, the Son is the Channel, and the Holy Spirit is the agent whereby authority is exercised. The Great Commission is to train disciples in Christian knowledge and for effective service. The Great Commission is a simple command with three steps: Evangelism, Baptism and Education.

The Church should always be spiritually militant and evangelistically aggressive as we take His claims of Lordship to the entire world of our generation. Every Christian should determine that their ministry for Christ in the church upholds God’s objectives for that institution. We must be led by the Spirit to be successful, that is the biblical characteristic of the believer.

This is why we are a church with a mission. Our Mission Purpose is to Preach, Teach and Reach. We know that Jesus said He would be with us always even unto the end of the earth.

On August 16, 1963 a group of brothers and sisters met in the home of Rev. & Sis. J. E. Coleman for the purpose of electing a committee to organize a church. The church was named First Elizabeth Baptist Church, and Rev. J.E. Coleman as Pastor. The church worshipped with Rev. Will Simon and Faith Missionary Baptist Church for three months. On October 17, 1963 the First Elizabeth family purchased the Shiloh Baptist Church building for the sum of $3,000 located at 4205 Galesburg Street in the Sunnyside area.

In October 1969, the church moved to 5054 Mallow Street to a larger building. In September 1984, a Ground Breaking Service was held for the new worship building. On January 9, 1999 God called Pastor Coleman from labor to reward.

On June 13, 1999, the First Elizabeth church family elected Rev. W.D. Yancy as their new Pastor. God gave Pastor Yancy a vision to build spiritually and physically. Through his dedication to teach sound doctrine, and preach an uncompromised Gospel, the church has prospered in both areas.

The Lord has truly blessed the First Elizabeth family. Even though soul winning is Pastor Yancy’s top priority, the Lord gave him a vision to pay off the church mortgage. The remaining mortgage for $131.000 was paid in full in September 2007. In celebration of God’s marvelous works, on November 17, 2007 the church family rejoiced in commemoration with a Black and White Ball. On the following day there was a Mortgage Burning Ceremony.

The Lord continues to flourish and pour out his many blessings on the First Elizabeth Church family. Pastor Yancy reminds us, in Galatians 6:9 “Let us not be wearying in well doing, for in due season we shall reap if we faint not.” We are a Church that’s Preaching, Teaching and Reaching”.

On April 28, FEBC will be celebrating 61 years. God has blessed us tremendously to be a beaconing light in our community. We give God all the Glory for all that He has done. You are invited to celebrate with us.
